Fetal Reduction

Fetal Reduction is a highly specialized and delicate medical procedure, often performed in the case of multiple pregnancies, such as triplets or quadruplets, to help ensure a safer journey for both the mother and the developing babies. Rooted in compassion and guided by medical precision, this procedure is undertaken to reduce the number of fetuses in the womb, giving the remaining baby or babies the best possible chance for healthy growth, full-term development, and a safe delivery.

While the decision to undergo fetal reduction is never easy, it is one made with deep thought, emotional strength, and expert medical guidance. By carefully balancing the well-being of the mother and the children she carries, the procedure seeks to lessen risks associated with preterm birth, low birth weight, and other complications that may arise in high-order multiple pregnancies.

How is Fetal Reduction done?

  • Ultrasound Assessment: The procedure begins with a detailed ultrasound scan to evaluate the position, size, and health of each fetus. This helps the doctor plan the safest approach.
  • Preparation: The mother lies comfortably on the examination table. The abdominal area is cleaned and prepared in a sterile manner. Local anesthesia may be given to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  • Guided Procedure: Under continuous ultrasound guidance, the doctor inserts a very fine needle through the abdomen into the uterus. A special medication is administered to safely stop the heartbeat of the selected fetus.
  • Monitoring & Confirmation: The doctor confirms that the reduction is complete and checks the well-being of the remaining fetus(es) through ultrasound imaging.

Why is Fetal Reduction done?:

  • Reduces Pregnancy Complications: It lowers the chances of preterm birth, miscarriage, and growth restrictions.
  • Improves Fetal Survival & Growth: The remaining baby or babies get better nutrition, space, and blood supply, improving their overall growth and development.
  • Ensures Better Birth Outcomes: It increases the likelihood of a healthy birth weight and reduces the risk of long-term health problems in the newborns.
  • Protects Maternal Health: Multiple pregnancies can put physical and emotional strain on the mother; fetal reduction helps make the pregnancy safer and more manageable.
